There are 50 states (48 continental, colloquially called the lower 48; 1 arctic enclave north of canada (alaska) and 1 archipelago in the pacific (hawai'i)).
We also have 1 federal district (District of Columbia), 5 inhabited possessions (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands), 9 uninhabited possessions (Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Palmyra Atoll, Wake Island), and three freely associated areas (Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau)

There are 50 exactly. The federal governors also control trust territories such as Puerto Rico and Guam, and thee is a federal district called D.C., in the city of Washington on the east coast, where the citizens do not have regular voting rights.
