A small rug or mat made from inside/outside carpeting (that fake grass) that people place by doors in order to wipe shoes on before entering a house.

It's used in slang "Someone's doormat" meaning that you let someone walk all over you.

I'm from Britain too, people don't see this as a true representation of British people. I would say 99% of Brits would know what a doormat is, both meanings.

the object is a bristly rug that people put in front of their doors so people can wipe the dirt off their feet before going inside.
If someone is called a doormat, it is meant to say that they are a 'push-over', or let people 'walk all over them', basically meaning that they don't stand up for themselves.

When someone is referred to as a "doormat" it means that they allow (knowingly or unknowingly) people to walk all over them. Because they don't stand up for their rights, they are used.

I think you are thinking of a term used to describe a person that other people walk all over, that gives in easily and does what other people want and is not assertive.
