I just heard it for the first time today, it's amazing. I always didn't like Johnny Cash because I hate country, but this song is awsome. And the video is even better, I almost cried watching it... who else thinks this song is awsome? i usually don't like songs like this.

Well, it's a great song, and Johnny Cash did a decent job with it, despite it being country.

However, the original version, by Nine Inch Nails, is better.

If you mean sad like; as you listen to it, it makes you feel like Johnny Cash knows this was going to be the last song he ever sang for his family, friends and fans...then yes! This was by far the saddest song I had ever heard. It had so much truth and emotion behind it. Cover or no cover, he made the song his "own". He had the strength to sing a song that was true to his heart and had to be the hardest performance of his career. Wonderful for him that he had one last chance to share himself with the world!

Your correct it is a very sad song, but the saddest song I ever
heard was by a artist you might not be familar with, his name is B.J. Thomas and the song is a old Hank Williams song called "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". Country music these days sounds allot like the rock music of the 70's.

Johnny Cash is awesome...him covering Hurt was just spectacular. It is said that it brought Reznor to tears, because of how well he did it.

The original and Cash's version are almost two different songs. Both being equally great in their own respect.

I think it is a song that is sad b/c of the truth that comes through out of the words and b/c of the emotion put into it. Its almost inspiring if you thing about it. I like the song, but I hate country, which must mean he did something great there, lol.

Actually it's a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song, but yes. Cash's performance is haunting.

JOHNNY CASH LYRICS

"Hurt"

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Its written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails but Johnny sings it really well and yes it is one of the most emotinally impactful songs I have ever heard.
