Hate crimes are called hate crimes because they happen for the reason of, oh, yeah, Hate. If you beat up someone because they Gay and only for that reason, that is a hate crime. People have to be educated that being Gay, Black, White or other hate crimes, have no basis in a civil society.

Edit: To the person right below me, your example proves the need. If you beat your wife, it is because she is your wife. If you just walk down the street, and punch every woman you see, because you just hate women that is a hate crime. Oh, and remember that beating one's spouse is a special class of crimes as well. We punish wife/husband beaters greater than just beating someone you don't know.

As to the robbery, you have a situation where the beating came as a result of the robbery. That is a crime seperate from the beating. So, as you point out that both received horrible beatings, if you just punish the beating on, say, a woman, her attacker is punished less then the robber with a same result.

The feelings of hate cannot be helped, but the actions are perpetuated out of fear of others. Children are not born with the ability to hate, it is learned. Yes, try to educate as much as possible. Teach what hate does to others. For example, the museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles has had a great impact on teens and adults of every race, because it has a large section that focuses on every race and group, who have been victims of crimes. But it would be better to call these crimes, instead of hate crimes, because that just differenciates types of crimes.

First of all stop calling them "HATE".

A CRIME IS A CRIME IS A CRIME.

Labeling an illegal act with the word "hate" only helps to widen the divide in racial relations.

Are you aware of the fact that a white man can commit a violent crime against a black man, and it NOT be racially motivated? Well guess what? That crime will AUTOMATICALLY be labeled as a hate crime on the issue of color ALONE. Now you have a guy that might have been locked up for 3 year get 20, and on top of that, the entire nation's black communities will be up in arms. Racism will never end unless we stop being racists and the media stops race bating and the lawyers and the judges and the legislators stop their racism.

And also, labeling guaranteed freedoms such as "SPEECH" with the word 'hate' just gives the PC Nazis the power to destroy our Bill of Rights under the guise of "Racism".

Wake up and don't let your racists feelings give evil people the power to take away our Rights and Constitution.

Easiest way is to get all Hate Crimes laws declared unconstitutional since they clearly violate equal protection. Two people walk out of bars and get beaten half to death, one has their money taken the other is called a "f@g", they were both still innocent people who were nearly murdered by monsters and deserve the SAME remedies under the law. Their attackers all still attacked innocent victims and nearly murdered them and ALL deserve the SAME punishment under the law.
I remember in 2000 when Byrds daughter and the NAACP had ads against Bush because he didnt support Hate Crimes legislation- she said it was like her father was murdered again- conveniently these loons failed to mention that TWO of THREE were put to DEATH and last I checked, you can only kills someone ONCE.

First, eliminate the definition of 'hate' crime. All crimes are a matter of 'hate' to some degree.

Second, stop harping so much on racial victimization. All this does is teach racist attitudes to new generations. Instead, follow Martin Luther King's dream of a color blind society. Nobody gets special consideration because of the color of their skin. Every person must prove themselves by the content of their character.

Teach good character, not racial divisiveness.

hate crimes?

soooooooooo....the husband who shoots his wife... or beats her senseless...what is that? a love crime???

it is all violent crime...period...end of story...

and when we partition out some crimes as "hate" or racially motivated ...it suggests that some violent crime is worse than others ... i got news...

it doesn't get any worse than one human doing violence to another human being...whether it is for infidelity...

or the color of one's skin....

stop the racism in this country...isn't that what martin luther king was all about?
