I just bought a 1G ram card. I already have 2 512mb ram cards installed. Can I have 2 different types of ram cards plugged in at the same time? Or do I have to have all of the same type of ram (512mb or 1G)

They have to be compatible type but not capacity.

EX:
2 X 512MB PC2700 preinstalled
adding 2 X 1GB PC4700 should be fine

Matched pair works best for dual channel mode (faster). However, newer Intel chipsets that support Flex Memory technology can run different sizes in dual channel mode.

But running 1Gb plus 512mb in single channel mode is not that bad since not all applications are able to take advantage of the wider memory bandwidth of dual channel mode.
