The key point of confusion betrayed by your use of "anything" is your implicit assumption that it is a "thing". You cannot imagine infinity if you insist on visualizing a set of "things" in you head, each of finite extent (like meters or numbers). Infinity, instead, is a hypothetical number *related* to finite numbers, not one of them. Imagine the relationship that if you have any finite number, regardless of how large, infinity is more. That gets to the essence of its mathematical definition. That is, the fact that it *is* beyond anything tangible and finite is what it means. When you understand that, you have "imagined" infinity.

There is a stone in Australia 3 miles long 1 mile wide and one mile high. There is a bird that comes every 100.000 years to sharpen its claws on that stone. When the stone gets all worn out there will have happened 1 second of eternity.

you would be surprised. we think about infinite things all the time. the calculus deals with mathematics at inifinite levels.

you can always imagine the N case, then the N+1 case, and deduce the overall case using induction.

I don't think you can. However, there is a symbol for it.
It looks like a sideways 8.

On a related note, I used to try and imagine nothingness but couldn't do that either.

space is definitely a good example of something infinite. Also, God has no beginning or end. Amazing, huh? :)
