are you just going to have your video card in a crystal jar or something?
what CPU do you have?
what Memory? (DDR(1)-400, @ least??
does your motherboard have a PCI-E 16? or just PCI-E 8?
you may even get a 8800GT and still not see much performance increase, if the rest of your PC isn't up to it.
but if it does, yes, of course, you'll get a nice performance boost (and DX10 compatibility on top, if you use Vist0).

In overall performance, the 8600GT is about 1/3 faster than the 7600GT. And if you need DX10 support, the 8600GT has it, the 7600GT doesn't.

BUT 8600GT has a nice overclocking headroom. You can further boost its performance.
