i think it is most important to keep themsafe and from going extent. as long as they try to keep their living habitat as close as where they live in the wild it is a good thing. we are taking a lot more of the wild away from some animals so it is right that we give them a place to live and reproduce.

Only the road side poop holes or those who do nothing for conservation should be shut down. Most zoos however in this day in age in the US do the following... 1: Provide both financial, equipment, time, knowledge and experience support to conservation programs in the wild around the world. 2: Run SSP programs where species breeding is very carefully monitored so that blood lines remain healthy and stable so that healthy problems can be released into the wild now or years down the road. 3: Breed and release animals into the wild. Also take in injured/orphaned animals and rehab them for release. If they cannot be released they provide them with a safe home. 4: Provide vast amounts of education programs be it through tours in the park, keeper talks, shows, animal presentations, classes or taking animals off property to school and other groups that do not have the means to get to the zoo. As to people saying that the are taken out of their natural habtiat... that is something that really is not done in this day in age with most zoos. Zoos run breeding programs so they do not have to take animals from the wild. With saying that they are removed from their families. The vast majority of animals do not stay with their family and have no concept of family. That is not to say that they do not have feelings for those they birth/raise or live with. My point is that they do not place as much value on it as we do. I once heard someone try to argue that it was cruel to house a bull elephant alone, however that person had no clue that once they are of a certain age the females kick the boys out and they live on their own. Bulls will sometimes group with other bulls but it is not common, they really are only with other elephants when breeding comes into play or when they happen across one another.

It depends a lot on the zoo. Many are very good at providing a
natural like habitat. There are many animals that would be extinct today if not for Zoos. There are also programs in effect to help wild populations recover.
I do believe the best place for any animal is in the wild, but unfortunately, we have destroyed so much habitat, that the only place some animals can survive is in captive settings.

Animals are best in the wild, however, zoos raise awareness about animals and their needs from society. There are some great zoos like Point Defiance in Tacoma which tries to keep the animals in a natural habitat environment and they saved the red wolves from extinction.

For some it's good. The Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson has animals that were injured and would never survive in the wild, that are native to the desert. Includes cougars and a pair of nesting Bald Eagles.

lt's a hard debate, in a perfect world we would love to see animals in their natural habitat, but zoos do help to preserve them, keep them safe and protect them from predators and poachers. Many animals in zoos are actually bred in captivity.
The life expectancy of a zoo animal is almost double that of an animal in the wild.

when i go to the zoo I feel bad for the wild animals not in their natural habitat. i know that people say that they are being protected but still.... if people didn't drive them off of their natural habitat they would not be endangered so.... I guess humans are the bad guys either way. sucks don't it!!

well, some zoos take indangered species or some that have been harmed and let them go in the wild later. i think the environment depends on the location. like the zoo where i live suks... i feel so bad for them, but they also help indangered animals and stuff. so it really depends i guess.

There are too many people out there who do not care about an animal's endangered status, only their delicacy meat, skins and tusks. Look what's happening in Japan with all those poor slaughtered dolphins. So much for free.

I rather think they belong to their natural habitat.
I never liked Zoos, I still dont, I always got out of there depressed, even more in my country, where animals in the Zoos are starving and desperate, just as the people itself.
So, if you think they suffer here, imagine there.
