Of course death itself is imminent, so all is ripe for destruction by nature. We face this possibility always. Now, man's part in life is such that he can choose to love what he is and do good or to hate what he is and do bad. Since life will always be, even though the particulars die, then he who promotes and loves life is eternal in the sense of spirit. As to our ability to prevent needless suffering and help those in need, we can only do the best we are capable of at the time and should not feel distress at our impotence if indeed we have tried our best.

I think the question itself assumes that humans all find that life is one disaster after another. I think it's a matter of perspective for each individual. The question (in my opinion) is skewed to point those answering from that standpoint, i.e., there are bound to be people who don't see life as a 'big cyclone of cat 5 disasters.

Disasters are unusual events and a rational person overcomes disaster and gets on with living a wonderful life (their natural state).

An irrational person makes poor decisions (or no decisions) and lives a life full of disaster (their natural state).

I happily make my life amidst the ruins of my dreams.

Who can out plan the tumult of life? I certainly can't. I make my way, not knowing what tomorrow will bring armed with a little hope, a little courage, and some love. It will do.
