Try looking at colleges not only within the US but outside as well. Other than teaching marine bio or zoology many of them run private reasearch projects outside of the college.

For example I was offered a job working within a National Park doing private govt research on an entomology project. Though it was through the govt and in a park it was still headed through the University.

Try looking under a Federal Job search as well, depending on the state they always have tons of Natural Resource positions.

You said you looked at zoos so I am not sure if you have tried it yet but look at the AZA (us zoos) and WAZA (world). They always have job and project listings. Even if you do not want to work at a zoo/aquarium it can give you some ideas.

actually as a zoologist you don't necessarily get much hand on experience with wild animals. If you want to study behavior it's pretty much hands off, you don't want to study the behavior of tame or semitame animals. A lot of model systems in zoology are flies and mice or rats, not necessarily some "cool" animal, and if you end up doing molecular biology you might work with cell cultures and not see much of an animal at all. Probably being a vet is much more hands one. Though a friend who became a vet decided after a few years that dealing with the pets was fine, but dealing with the owners not.
While Zoos might be fun to work in you'll have a lot of competition there. You could try out an internship at one or several zoos. You'd get an idea what different careers there are at a zoo.

After that then you definately can pursue learn into your particular area of interest, no remember if it is coral bleaching or some thing else. bear in mind although, that once you're doing learn in those aspects that it exceptionally much consistently comprises lots of field artwork, and it extremely is not all exciting and video games!
