And how do you know if something is a BOOK, not a NOVEL?

All the places I look for formatting regular book titles say something different. Some places say none at all, some italic, some underlined.

It's actually a matter of personal preference, but there are some basic guidelines that you should follow. Also, it depends on the type of book/novel, whether it's fiction or non-fiction.

Generally, titles should always be in bold for emphasis. Chapter titles or headers are usually larger in size, with chapter descriptions or subheaders italicized. Section headings are usually emboldened and underlined.

Example:

Chapter One {font size:14pt bold}
The Beginning {font size: 12pt bold italics}

Some text...

For Clarity {bold underlined}

A novel is generally defined as being between 60,000 and 100,000 words in length.

Both should be italicizes, but if you're handwritnig it, you should underline it, I think.
