The first democratic society was Athens, Greece. So democracy began in Greece, even if it wasn't a real democracy. Only free, of-age male nobility could participate in the democratic process. This left out a large section of the populace (women, children, claves, and immigrants) but it was still democracy.

Ancient Greece is regarded as the cradle of democracy - but it was democratic only for the upper classes, and only for men. Women and workers didn't count.
