There are between 4 and 12 thousand still around, mostly in the pacific. There are 250 or fewer in the North Atlantic. They are an endangered species but their population is stable. In the Northern Hemisphere they can be seen off of the coast of Monterey during their annual migrations. They are also very common in an area called the Costa Rica Dome, a spot of ocean about 500 miles off the coast of Costa Rica. Last year 322 different blue's were seen in that area, it is a nutrient rich upwelling that attracts several species of whales.

There are still a few thousand blue whales and their numbers are increasing. There is an area off the coast of southern South Australia and western Victoria called the Bonney Upwelling. At various times of the year there are huge increases in the numbers of krill in the cold water and the blue whales come in to feed. You can take blue whale watching trips in boats from small towns such as Robe in South Australia. It is becoming very popular.

If you are into whale watching, you can also see humpback whales along the east and west coasts of Australia, southern right whales in the Bight and sperm whales around Tasmania all depending on the time of year.
