Before golf was invented, hail was a standard size that other spheres were measured by. The first known set of rules for golf state that for regulation play "a hailstone sized ball" must be used.

Archaeologists found substantial evidence that suggests that there once existed a pre-golf era known as pseudoimportante that used balls of a regulated size. Though the game has long since been forgotten, it was once a very significant aspect of pre-golf culture in that, like the role of the modern golf ball, it was used to measure the size of hail.
