If you are buying for a girlfriend, take her to the perfume counter and spray only a little bit..let it stay on her wrist about a minute. Then see how well the cologne smells on her. Depending on her body chemistry, some will smell great in the bottle but terrible on the body.

If you are trying to surprise her, then you will have to do the same test. Try a lot of different fragrances. Make sure you buy from a place that has a little pack of coffee beans. You need to sniff the coffee beans after you sample each fragrance to remove the "aftersmell" and then make your pick.

Avoid all the ones that smell the exact same after a few minutes. These are synthetic colognes and don't hold up. Please stay away from Avon, please, please. Sorry, just my opinion.
Pick a fragrance that is not too sweet and not too spicy. There are some that are tried and true fragrances; the ones that have continued to withstand the test of time. Such names as
Chanel, Guerlain, Calvin Klein, Estee Lauder are some of the good brands.

No cologne is best for me, I like the natural scent.
But there's this one cologne a guy friend was wearing that smelled so good I would find myself next to him all the time trying to smell him. I asked him what he was wearing and he said Dolce.

For women:Chanel Mademoiselle....about $70 an ounce....ouch!!!

For men: Obsession.....also similar in price....ouch again!!
(I'm a woman.....a man I knew who wore this just about drove me crazy being near him.....even could smell it on me or on clothes after being with him, on into the next morning, and it was great.) To this day, when I smell it, cannot help but think of him.

I wouldn't do that if I were you. To most girls, cologne is something that guys use to try to impress someone, but just a quick heads up, girls hate it. It just gives me a headache-no offense.
