It varies. Most State Judges are appointed and then stand for reelection. Some States appoint them, and then stand for either support or no support. Governor's do the appointments.

On the federal bench, all District, Court of Appeals and Supreme Court Judges are appointed by the President, and then confirmed by the senate. The appointment of all types of the Federal bench above are for life.

Local judges are elected. The Supreme Court Justices are appointed. May I point out that I disagree with that. Once they are appointed..it's for life. At the age of 93..can one understand the needs of the youth of today? I don't think so. Ever heard the saying "set in your ways"? I think that applies. I'm 63, so I'm not just speaking from resentment against any and everything. If you can't blow out your own birthday candles you have no right to delegate how others live their lives. Just my opinion.
