being the rapper or the producer?

I say producer..I'm a lot better at rappin that producing...(as in I have no skill at producing) (not like I'm talented at rappin either, but whatever) I've spent a month+ on FL7 and come out with one piece of 45 second crap...it sucks

BTW, I'm retired from producing, but I tossed up my one (and only) beat up in the files section for the group..(warning, it sucks--bad)

producing by far. not taking away anything from rappin, but producers have to have a trained and well-developed ear in order to have their sound. which inturn having a musical background is key. the producer is in the trenches knocking it out before and after the mc even comes on. if u think its tough with software-beats, imagine working with an MP, live instruments, a hundred track mixing board(each with about 10-20 knobs), mics and mic placement, wiring, 2-inch reel, slicing/splicing tape, fazers, filters, and dealing with laggin knucklehead asss rappers. hah and thats not even mixing and mastering.

Producing , probably. the producer not only has to make the beat, but has to guide the artist through making the song. Sometimes the producer comes up with the topic of the song, or the style. There are too many things to think about in producing.

Producing is harder, and I suck balls at Fruity Loops, eventually imma by a mpc, cause ive played around with those, and i can at least make a hot drum beat, u got farther than I ever could with FL.

EDIT: i thought of another reason, almost every producer puts out an album where they rap, or at least have tracks they rap on, not many rappers try there hand at producing. So if Swizz Beats can sell a rap album, Id say rapping is easier.

Definitely producing. I picked up both as a hobby while Im in college. I been writing lyrics in different journals while in my downtime and even in classes. And once you find your style Its not very hard to do. The hard part is pushing yourself to get better because you get complacent and it gets hard to make your lyrics better and better

I started producing in FL 7 demo and damn dat shits hard. Ive been bangin out some sub average beats lately but it took me a while to get anything relatively hearable out of that. And since you pretty much have to know music theory and have some good vst's its hard to do original material. So I usually rely on sampling. But thats still hard to make it come out original and not just a remix of an old song. With producing you have to find and tune sounds. You have to arrange them right. You have to find your own distinct sound. Its so much harder then rapping its not even funny. Not to mention more expensive if you want to get serious you have buy so much necessary equipment. In rap at MOST all you need is a pencil and notebook and if you on your Jay Z thing you dont even need that.......

I think both are equally hard. With rapping you have to master your breathing, delivery, flow, presence, voice, when to hit the beat etc etc. With producing you have to get a grip of the programme you're using, mesh instruments that compliment each other, and in some cases master the use of instruments. But for me i think rapping would be harder, there's a 'handbook' for producing in that once you know how to use a programme, its really all about adding in and taking out sounds, to produce something you like. But with rapping you have to develop your own style. And not everyone has that ability.

Where's the files section?

EDIT: What the hell, I'm lost.

Damn. Uhhh i wanted to be nice, but that is horrible. You used that bell toll pretty badly, its pretty monotonous, and bland and the bassline was sporadic.

But its better than anything i could do, and i've heard worse. =)

EDIT: haha nah if you stuck at it you'd definitely get better. I know a guy who's horrible at rapping and even worse at producing, but he's still going at it and he's getting better with every piece. You can't expect your first try to be a masterpiece. At least you can rhyme? =(

your not very good but you shouldn't quit, just try to improve. I think the producer has it harder by the way.
