Here in the U.S., I'd say the best thing about modern life is the invention of the microwave oven. Second would be the ability to connect with anyone in the world (providing you know their email address, or phone number). I live in the north-central section of the country and my immediate family is on the East Coast - so connectivity is a great help in keeping in touch.
