- The first thing I do is look for a 3x3 grid with two numbers in the same column or row. For example, the center grid, center column has a 2 at the top and a 1 at the bottom. If there is a 3 that intersects between the two numbers, then I know the 3 does not belong in that column of the center 3x3 grid. Knowing that the intersecting number(s) cannot be in that column or row, I check the 3x3 grids in the adjacent 3x3 grids above and below for a 3. If the grid above has a 3 in the left column, then I know a 3 goes in the bottom-center 3x3 grid's center column, and another goes in the center grid's right column.
I then find rows or columns with matching numbers, and narrow down the possibilities in one column or row in a 3x3 grid.
Then I look for x number of squares who have possibilities for the same numbers, and eliminate all other possibilities for those squares.
Then I repeat the process until I've filled in the dang puzzle -- usually in 15 minutes for "insane" or "crazy" difficulty level.

You will need to be more specific. Are you referring to a singel sudoku puzzle, a sumarai sudoku puzzle or another variant such as the sudoku-ball (www.sudoku-ball.com)? Each of these puzzles require another method for solving.

Look for the number that is provided the most & go from there. Once I'm halfway through with an area of the puzzle, process of elimination usually works.
