I have a ton of Java updates taking up space on my computer---do I need them all? Can I remove any of them? These are the ones I have: Java SE v1.4.2, and I have Update 2, 4, 6, 11. I see there is another update yet waiting to install. Thanks.

Yes and no. I often find the updates to be a nuisance, but you do want to use the latest (supported) version of Java Runtime Environment.

I suggest uninstalling all the JRE's you have installed via the Add/Remove Programs, then restart your computer, then download the latest one from Java.com.

One of the updates I get every time I install it, is an offering to use Open Office. Open Office is free and optional.

Install the latest update and then you can safely remove all of the older versions in Add/ Remove Programs.
