depends on the kind/strengh of the filter. try looking up your filter on the net. does it have any name/id #'s on it?
goldfish do ok in non filter water but you will have to clean more often without a filter. gold fish like their water colder than tropicals around 65-70 is fine for them so most people don't use heater with them. my friend got one from a fair and it lived for over 8 years in a mason jar!

oh and don't change more than 20% of the water at a time as this will destroy your nitrosommas and nitrabratates (hope i spelled those right) these are miro-organisms in your water that devolope over time. they convert the waste products of your fish (pee, poop, leftover food) that would become toxic ammonia into safe nitrates. many ppl's fish become ill after doing water changes if all the water is changed.

HI Ally. I would strongly advise you to forget the 10 gallon & get yourself a 20 gallon [at least] with a fitted lid, a filter capable of running tank of at least twice that size & a master test kit for your water parameters. You need to act quickly because Goldfish need filtered water to survive any length of time despite the weight of opinion to the contrary!

[NOTE:the reason you don't often see 20 year old Goldfish that are15" long is entirely due to the 'Bowl Culture']

The link below is well worth familiarising yourself with, you might want to bookmark it because it tells you everything to keep your fish healthy & happy. Feel free to email me if I can help further.

What is it, a little under gravel filter? It should be fine as long as you don't put more than an inch of gravel over it and keep up with your cleanings. You may have to do it every 3-4 days depending on how dirty they get, but a 10 gal. is quick to do. Feed adequately, but be careful not to over feed. When you pull a change, stir up the gravel, then pull the water. Also, make sure you keep the air line(s) from clogging, with pipe cleaners or something-- Good luck!

Filter from one Gallon wont work as well in a 10 it all depends on the pump/flw rate and what filter it is. But with only two goldfish its better than nothing as you can keep them without filter and pump as long as you do small partial water changes etc.

nope. go to wal mart, or a pet shop.

for every gallon bigger, there is a filter made just for that size.

a 10 gallon tank needs a filter made for a 10 gallon tank.. mostly because of the filter cartridges.

for 2 goldfish that you won at a fair, I'd just keep them in the 1 gallon.

goldfish are one of those fish that DO NOT need filters and a lot to keep them happy. They would be fine in a flower vase, or a small plastic cage you can buy at petsmart for 3 bucks.

Chances are.. with fish from carnivals/fairs.. they die fairly soon after getting them.. They are usually feeder goldfish and cost all of 12 cents in pet stores.
