By reassurance.
But if it is reoccurring, or if you are not able to prevent the crying inspite of all your reassurances, it may be a sign of Depression.

Well, I am a crybaby person lol.
I think thoughtful cry is important because it will make you real human with real feelings and you grow up much better after crying and you are able to learn your own lessons.
A person who never cries at all is the one who has no feeling and senseless. A person who never cry at all is basically a robot, not a human being at all.

it's really hard to prevent yourself from crying for anything. i am not a huge crier but there are still times when i do and i do so gladly, i always feel great after a good cry. however i feel that i am somewhat emotionally detached which is why i'm not a huge crier.

This question makes as much sense to me as:
How can you prevent yourself from breathing.

Denying yourself the freedom to breathe can be detrimental to your health... and Denying yourself the freedom to feel emotion is too.

You would be better to allow yourself to experience whatever it is that you feel.
Then you can work through it, and move on.
