I was thinking about getting a wool coat for the winter but I don't know if its as warm as a down feather coat.
I also know that wool coats aren't water proof so you don't have to bother with that small detail.

I've had both and lived in severe climates. No question that quality down is warmer than quality wool. It's also instantly warm, rather than taking a few minutes to trap enough body heat to be warm, like wool.
(Check current catalogues like L.L. Bean for the temperature ratings for its own down and wool coats.)
Down coats are bulky and some people think they're uniformly unflattering. They're generally waterproof and many are machine washable. Wool is more stylish, less bulky, and properly cared for, can last many, many years. (Our son's winter coat is wool and predates WWII.)
However, unless you spend a substantial amount of time outdoors, you should be fine with either. Pick whichever suits your lifestyle, and buy the best quality you can afford.

I've found a good quality wool coat to be warmer.

Isn't wool itchy? I don't know about wool coats very well, but I have had a black down jacket and it's really cute and SOOO warm. It is the warmest coat I have ever worn. I do not suggest you get a leather one though, because they are not warm at all although sexy. Good luck!

DOWN. before i started wearing down, i wore wool with a down vest. then i figured, who needs the wool? many down coats are waterproof so they are more functional AND they keep you warm

I think wool is warmer and not as bulky as down.

get down because theres nothing as uncomfortable as being pushed into a cold lake wearing a wool jacket

feather coat is warmer and waterproof
there are pinguings at the poles but not sheep.
