if 1 + 1 = 2 then 2 - 1 must equal to 1. That is where the proof lies.

(i) 1+1 = 2

(ii) 1 = 2 -1 (subtracting 1 from each side).

since (ii) is true, it implies (i) must be true too.

if (ii) was false, then (i) would be false too.
