This is known by roofers and builders as the rake edge and NO you do not need d-metal or edge metal if you have a minimum of 3/4 of a inch of roofing past edge of roof decking and trim. If you do not have any overhang on Rakes you can install a 1-1/2"x 1-1/2" x 10' x 90 degree metal nailed directly over roofing materials, using 1-1/2 " galvanized nails with rubber or neoprene washers. Fasten every 2 feet (nail until snug and where pieces overlaps and at bottom edge of shingles, this will help prevent blown water & moisture damage to roof deck and facial or trim boards.

the wooden part is an overhang, or a soffit, called boxing when you build it in my area.
