because i have a friend called sameera, she supports michael schumacher buts hes retired now and now she supports kimi and lewis but shes says she is a f1 fan but i think shes not an f1 fan, well what i mean by that, i mean,

she doesn't watch every race,
she knows nothing about the drivers she supports,
she doesn't know who senna is or the past of f1,
and she doesn't watch the whole race,
and she hasn't seen a full race this year,

and it goes on...............
and to be an f1 as people say you have to support a team and driver but theres more to that !

so my question is to be an f1 should you least know about the past on f1 as in senna, prost times or james hunt or jackie stewart times etc... ?

Good question but there are different levels of being a fan, personally I wouldn't miss a race, qualifying session and often try to speed up the weekends where there is no race. I like looking at some of the forums and have been fortunate to see a few live races.

Maybe your friend is just realising that she likes F1, is too young to remember Senna as it was 13 years ago. Not all football fans could tell you about teams from 13 years ago. I know that your a huge fan so maybe you can try to educate her more lol.

But if she gets some enjoyment from F1 then yeah she a fan, just not a hardcore Kimi Ferrari fanatic like someone I could mention ;)

You don't need to know the full History of F1 to be a fan, but it's good to have an understanding of who Aryton Senna was and what happened to him.

You could give your friend names of drivers from the past so that she could read up about them heres a few names for you:

Juan Manuel Fangio
Giuseppe Farina
Sir Stirling Moss
Alberto Ascari
Mike Hawthorn
Phil Hill
Graham Hill
Jim Clark
John Surtees
Sir Jack Brabham
Sir Jackie Stewart
James Hunt
Nikki Lauda
Nelson Piquet
Alain Prost
Keke Rosberg
Aryton senna
Nigel Mansell
Damon Hill
Jacques Villeneuve
Michael Schumacher
Mika Hakkinen

hopes this is a good starting point and i think thats just about every world Champ since 1950

I think Lewis has pulled in a lot of knew fans this year, which is really good for the sport, but not knowing who people are from years ago isn't a problem.
When you first started watching it, did you know everything? that isn't a dig or anything because when i first started watching it (only 10 year ago) i didn't watch every race and didn't know much about it and gradually Ive got to know the past drivers. Now i refuse to miss a qualifying session. But its a passion i now have, so let your friend enjoy it with you and you can teach her the rest, as for someone your age you seem to know quite a bit about it and your a girl :-)
I can't say I'm an expert on F1 that's why i usually only answer "opinion" questions usually on here so don't hold it against her. I wish i had a girlie friend i could watch it with x

Well, for one to call himself/herself an F1 fan, not knowing who Ayrton is, is an insult. I mean, he's like the F1 legend! And if anyone declares themselves a fan of the sport without knowing who Ayrton or Michael is (for example), that means they cannot call themselves a fan.

Of course not everyone can know everything that happened in the sport or every single drivers' history because some of us are the younger generation. So we haven't had the chance to watch people like Ayrton and Prost race; it's not our fault. But all the same, a fan has to at least recognize the names.

As for your friend, maybe she really loves the sport but misses out on the race due to something she can't avoid. But if she can actually watch the race but doesn't want to... well, then that's a different story. Hope that enlightens you on this topic.

Well I have friends like that too, she's a Hami fan. And well, I frankly don't know how to define a F1 fan but basic knowledge I guess would be important. What I would qualify your friend is the "watch for face" type. They are in it for the drivers and not necessarily anything else. Or it's just that she enjoys seeing the drivers face and probably tune in to before and after a race... But to call yourself a F1 fan and not know the greats of it is also shameful. To not know anything much about the driver you support is also weird. Supporting a team however, is somewhere in the grey area. Hey I support like 3-5 teams, die hard of one but happy to see the other 4. But your friend on the other hand, Soz, I can't really think of her as a formula 1 fan.

This is a very interesting question..Its all about age..I remember Fangio & Jack Brabham, Phil Hill, How many people remember Denny Hulme in 67, Jackie Stewart..Younger people now unless you do alot of research you might not remember Senna ..Hey he is my favorite driver ever, so I know who he is big time, I actually saw the guy race. So many people live in the actual moment of present drivers, thats all they know..Tell your friend there so many books and internet info on F1...she needs to go back in time during the off season, learn about the great guys of yesterday...re-live some of the best yrs and drivers in F1 history, its awesome. I maybe be a Nascar fan..But I follow F1 as well..... I just love racing..

There's a difference between a fan and a spectator. A spectator hangs out and watches what's going on without knowing much about the foundation or the rules of the sport. A fan knows the ins and outs and has a clue about the history of the sport. To me, you're not a real F1 fan if you don't know about drivers like Fangio, Jackie Stewart, Senna, Prost, and other legends. How could you even call yourself a fan if haven't seen a race?

I think you can still be a fan of a sport but not necessarily know about the past starts. In American Football, someone could be a huge Colts fan and love Peyton Manning and not know anything about the Baltimore Colts or Johnny Unitas.

She's definitely not a true F1 fan because she doesn't watch every race or has not seen a full race this year.

I can call myself a true F1 fan because I have watched every race this year, along with every practice session and qualifying session. I recorded them on DVD's also just like I have since 2004.

Hell, I'm not an F1 fan (tried to watch it, just couldn't get into it sorry) and I know who Senna is. Was impressed on how he influenced the Acura NSX, some reason the article in Car And Driver caught my interest. Jackie Stewart is familiar to me as a commentator on American auto racing back in the 80's.

she is what i would call an armchair fan. i know i would be going off my head if i couldn't watch a race lol. although i have been watching f1 for donkeys years, there are a lot of the older drivers i don't know an awful lot about, and I'm absolutely useless when it comes to the technical bits. you are a breath of fresh air as far as i am concerned. it is unusual for one so young to be into the sport as much as you are. your friend may develop her interest in time, but i expect she is like a lot of teenagers with more than one thing on her mind. when the time is right for her she will start asking about Senna and the other greats. i'm sure you will be on hand to fill her in :-)
