I have two PCs with mercury boards . They have Via Rhine 2 fast ethernet adapters on board.Are these NIC are autosensing ? if I tried straight thru cable , will it harm my PC .

No network cards have intelligence, only routers and switches. Cross-over is essential.

You will need a cross over cable. Straight through just wont work (dont need to worry about damage). But you will need to assign some IP address information to both the systems to get data exchange going between the two systems.

Do not use a straight through cable, it can harm one or both computer. What you need is a crossover cable, a router, or a network switch.

I do not know if it would hurt your pc, but one wire has to be crossed for proper communication, as two of the lines are transmit and receive, so the transmit wire has to be received on the receive wire on the opposite pc, make sense? :)
