Putin's statement at a Victory Day parade on Red Square on Wednesday was artfully phrased to be both blunt and vague — but political observers have little doubt he was criticizing the United States for "disrespect for human life, claims to global exclusiveness and dictate, just as it was in the time of the Third Reich."

MAFRA, Portugal (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin drew a parallel on Friday between U.S. plans for a missile shield in Europe and the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, widely regarded as the closest the world came to nuclear war.

TEHRAN, Oct. 16 — President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said at a summit meeting of five Caspian Sea nations in Iran on Tuesday that any use of military force in the region was unacceptable. In a declaration, the countries agreed that none would allow their territories to be used as a base for military strikes against any of the others.

Because the Supreme Leader of Iran perhaps told him not too.
He does not want WW3 and will remove AMDJ if he has too. Germany gave him a lashing, her border to Finland is a problem as they may refuse to remove land mines... she is flying in Norway's airspace and they are p'od... a long list. But he must boast of supremacy. I think he is bluffing.

*there is also some reports that Russia is running low on oil resources... explains the interest in the Trans Caspian Oil Pipeline, meant for the Black Sea they & Iran want the badly needed oil. That and last week was the Communist Party Conference in China. Big week for the boys to show feathers or dragon smoke.

btw excellent question & links! Bravo!

Bush has misled us, and the administrative branch has falsified intelligence on one occasion. in spite of the undeniable fact that, I trust you. he's not Hitler. He invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, no longer China and Britian, so he's not the flexibility hungry guy some make him out to be. people who incredibly hate in simple terms use the Iran guy as a results of fact the Iran guy hates Bush too. The terrorists and the supporters of terrorism are the genuine evil, as you propose. yet, we each and every so often ignore that.

Putin is ex-KGB. He seems to be a communist at heart, still interested in opposing the US.
The Soviets got beat in Afghanistan. The Russians are bogged down in Chechnya. They don't have the people, the resources or the military to go to war. Their only hope is the bluff of nuclear retaliation.

I don't think it'll be necessary for them to defend Iran since it's becoming clearer every day that no one can afford a war with Iran. Bush knows that, Putin knows that and that tin horn dictator in Iran knows that so they're all rattling their sabers knowing it's all rhetorical blather and nothing else.

If push comes to shove, Putin will realize that he has far less problems with the United States than he has with Islamic radicals.
