The Thurway intersects I81 just north of Syracuse, NY. Other than that there are some back country roads which probably will take you out of the way...

I-81 does not go through Ithaca. It does go through Syracuse, and you can access it there from the Thruway.
However, the Thruway doesn't really go north - it goes east and west. [Odd numbered Interstates go north/south; evens go east/west, generally speaking.]
