There have been many documaented cases of aggression on humans by wild dolphins. You did not mention where you were going to do this encounter, but wild dolphins (and all other marine mammals) are protected from harassment under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the restrictions set forth by the Marine Mammal Commission and the International Whaling Commission. Local laws may also be in place. I would do some very thorough research into federal and local laws where you are swimming.
Wild dolphinsare WILD animals. Not only do they have around 100 cone shaped teeth that they use to grab and hold slippery prey, they are adapted to the environment where they live; you are not. They have been known to ram things with their hard, bony rostrums. Keep in mind dolphins can weigh 400-600lbs easily, maybe more. Dolphins will "play" with objects; this includes pinnng things down underwater.
Dolphins that work with people daily show aggression. the people that work with them know how to see the signs of that and are trained in how to react; are you?
If you wish to interact with these animals, the best thing for you and them is to go to a program where there is supervision from trained professionals. This is the safest way! Yes, you might lose the "coolness" of interacting with wild animals, but it is the best solution for all parties involved.

With all wild animals, you have to be careful. Do not intentionally encroach into there space, ie directly in front or behind. In front they will barge you and behind you will get a serious slap.
And if they swim close enough for you to touch fine, but make sure any and all movements are slow and gentle, which should be less frightening.
Whatever you do, enjoy the experience and have fun tempered with common sense.

There have been and there have been attacks on trainers by dolphins in shows. One of them was recently shown on TV. I haven't heard of any deaths, but there have been injuries. Unless you're a research biologist, swimming with wild dolphis is a really stupid endeavor. They aren't pets and frankly, you don't belong in their environment. Leave them alone, let them do their thing and please don't treat the ocean as a Theme Park for Yupppies.
