Don't watch the Johnny Depp movie version, if you want to know what Washington Irving's story is about. It's an interesting movie but bears no resemblance to the story (except the names). You can read the entire short story here http://www.online-literature.com/irving/2846/ in - probably - under an hour. It's a very interesting story.

The new "enlightened" music teacher goes to Sleepy Hollow, an area filled with legend. There is one particular legend that catches his attention and imagination. He pretends that he's not superstitious, but that's not really true. Ichabod Crane is drawn to Katrina Van Tassel who is both pretty and rich (has a rich father) and decides he's going to marry her. His rival, Brom Van Brunt (nickname Brom Bones), uses the legend against him, with his friends' help. One night, after a harvest dance at the Van Tassel's house, Ichabod leaves...and is never heard of again. There's much more, but you'll have to read it to find out. :)

This site http://www.bookrags.com/studyguide-legendsleepyhollow/ has a lot of information about the story. I would still recommend that you read it yourself and form your own opinions.

Happy reading!

One of my all time faves. It takes place in upstate New York I believe sometime in the late 1700's or early 1800's. Its basically about a teacher named Ichabod Crane who comes to the small village of Sleepy Hollow and is one night pursued by a stange headless horseman ghost through the forest who goes around killing the locals in the nights.

"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is about an inspector who comes up from the city to investigate a series of murders in a tiny town.

He refuses to believe, with all of his scientific reasoning, that a ghost is committing the murders.

You ought to check out the movie version with Johnny Depp in it - "Sleepy Hollow." It is both scary and funny!

It is playful .. about Ichabod Crane, who has a crane-like
thin angular body, like a crane ( the bird ) and the protagonist,
Brom Bones who chases him with his cloak drawn over is head so that he looks like a headless horseman.

Because there is a legend abot a headless horseman, Ichabod is scared witless one night.

I dont recall that it is meaningful, much ....
but seventh- to tenth-grade teachers can make a devil of a case out of it.

The movie and the original short story have nothing in common except the name and names of a few characters. The disney short was good.
