as you may know, lava, which comes out of a volcano, is made up of molten rocks heated to a supremely high temperature by the earths core that it is a liquid.when a volcanic eruption occurs, the lava spews out of the volcano and cools. if the liquid magma comes in contact with a very cool substance, such as water, the lava cools very rapidly to form a new rock called obsidian. this entire process is all part of the rock cycle.

the lava that is extruded by volcanoes is just melted rocks so in actuality it's not making new rocks but reforming old ones. the rock that is left when lava cools is called basalt. some volcanoes spew ash which becomes a form of rock.

magma (or lava on the Earth's surface) is basically the liquid form of rock. when the lava cools it becomes solid again and is again called rock. (in this case, igneous rock) it's kind of like ice melting and then called water, but as soon as it becomes solid goes back to being called ice.
