I dont understand why if they're rewritable they stop being useable - doesnt that defeat the point of paying extra for them? Isnt it such a waste of materials to just end up throwing them away? How can I make them last longer?

This is too strange. Your CD-RWs are likely OK, but:

Once your rewritables convert themselves to read-only, copy all the files onto your hard drive. Then, right-click the disk drive the disk is in, and reformat the disk. That's the best you can do.

Maybe you bought really cheap, low quality ones?
