So my answer is trees... or wait a minute.... are they actually bushes?... i know bananas don't grow on trees... or was that just someone encouraging me to stop wasting them...

Actually they have closer resemblance to the group of food knowns as 'nuts'. With coffee and chocolate the part you consume is actually the seed from inside the fruit, which is what a nut is! Because most people grind them and drink water that they have been heated in and discard the solids they are classed as a beverage.
