It depends on the couple. For instance, some couples believe in the tradition of marriage, or will enter into a traditional married relationship because of family pressure. Others can be together forever without the traditional marriage bond, but be just as happy. Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed are an example.
But for either way to work, both parties must agree.

Everyone has their own opinions. I personally feel that a good solid marriage is the best. It also depends on your religious beliefs and how you were raised. It is much easier to let go when you are not married then when you are married. I feel that if you are married you will think a lot harder before leaving. On the other hand if you're not married its so easy to say "I have no ties, I'm outa here!"

Not to me. The main reason, I think, is for the protection of the law, but that's what common law marriages are all about. Depends on the laws in a particular state, however.

The things that are often not talked about in a live together relationship are legal. Whose name is the house in? Who is on the insurance policy? What happens when one of you die?

As long as both people are happy, then yes it is fine. Some people would prefer this over marriage.
