Last year when visiting Chicago I went back to a house I lived in 50 years ago. It was a 2 story, 4 unit building. It was in a very clean quiet neighborhood. It seemed much smaller than I remembered it and was in very good condition. Would you have knocked on the door and asked to see inside?

I've done it before--I did wait and see who answered the door first to get a feel for whether or not they were axe murderers before letting them know I used to live there. I also dropped a hint and then let them invite me in, rather than just asking. In an urban area especially, many residents will be wary of a stranger who shows up on their doorstep with a story like yours and asks to come in.

Added: I also had an excuse to knock on the door--I had found some items that belonged with the house and was dropping them off.

it might freak them out, and besides its not like it will really look like it did when you were there. the insides will be way different.
