Start reading up right now.
Decide which countries you want to see pretty soon and look for the best air travel soon.
That can be the cheapest flight, or a direct one from an airport near where you live.

Mostly the cheaper tickets and the direct flights go to few airports only, so best build your plans around them.

For most of Europe you will need only one visa, and that is a stamp you get when you land, not one you need to apply for before you leave.
Russia and Belarus and some more neighboring countries do ask for visa. Check if you need one on this site: http://skyteam.com/EN/travelPlanner/timatic/index.jsp
Make sure you get your passport in time, last year it was a nightmare, so do not wait till a few weeks before you leave but get it running as soon as you can.

Where do you want to go?
If you want to do as many countries in a short time getting a railpass is useful:
http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/passes/eurail_index.htm
But you need to be in the train more often than not to make it pay.
If you plan your travels well you might be able to get one single train ticket allowing you as many stops underway as you like, valid for 2 months.

A good travel agent can help you getting it planned, but most will just want to sell you a pass.
Here are links to some of the rail planners of the bigger European countries:
Germany: http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/international_guests.shtml
France: http://www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvHomePage?_DLG=SvHomePage&_CMD=cmdHomepageUK&WB=HP&rfrr=4685ac17fd2e7656e4918c53b246a3f7
UK: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

The German one is often used for travel in other countries too.
But you can find travel planners for each country when searching on train times and the name of the country. And all European train companies also have an English version on-line.

Remember that Europe gets more expensive when you travel north and west, with Switzerland and Austria in the center among the most expensive.
Eastern countries are cheaper.

List all places you have always wanted to go to, and google for information on them, there is a lot on the web.
Or get a good guidebook, I like and trust the Lonely Planet series, and read. You can find a lot of travel guides second hand or older versions in the cheaper bookshops.

Book tickets as soon as you are sure when you will travel, as they sell fast, but take an insurance on them, as you might get ill or otherwise not be able to travel.

I hope this is enough for now, and not to much yet.
Please ask more questions if you want to know more.
