Get a picture of your parents when they were first married...before having kids...still young...take the picture to have it enhanced/retouched...you can even have it done in black & white (if it isn't already)....if it's already black and white you can have them add colors to it...make it look like something from a movie that was enhanced for color TV...know what I mean? (This is so hard to describe.)
Anyway...that would cover about all of the cost for both parents...granted, it's one gift and not one for each, but I think they'd like it!

I have recently retired and have taken up cross stitch and am hoping one of the family will buy me a kit for Christmas, they can be quite expensive. My husband is a difficult one to buy for - when you get older all the boys toys are expensive; new computer etc. but does your Dad have a camera? Some of the new ones are really quite clever or what about a weather station for indoors. I'm from the UK so am not sure what the currency exchange rate would be but would guess about £50.00. You mention gift cards for dinner does this mean they like a really good bottle of wine or port. Port can be really quite expensive but is luscious with cheese after dinner. Would your Mum like a new scarf and matching hat and gloves - if you live in a colder part of the States. Watch the adverts on the TV they might just give you an idea. Good Luck and a Merry Christmas to you and your family.

My parents love food. I always get them something from William Sonoma, Harry and David, or Omaha steaks. I know it sounds really impersonal to give a gift basket, but often times the interesting food, utensils, or cookbooks that come with the basket end up being life long favorites. If you want something more fancy make your own gift basket of things they might like from stores they frequent.
For example I got my dad a bunch of little things from the art store and Sur Le Table. It included paint brushes and BBQ brushes and books for both cooking and watercolor (two things he loves). My Mom is always easy because she loves to bake and there are always fun new bunt pans, silicon mats, or soft grip cookie cutters (good for arthritic hands) that look great in baskets. My parents also love getting sweaters. Trite I know but what can I do?

Every year, I give my mom a nice Christmas decoration (she LOVES Christmas and Christmas Decorations). Her house is always beautifully decorated and she loves receiving new decorations every year. This year I am giving her a 4 foot tall lamp post with a flickering candle light in it - it's decorated with greenery, holly berries and pine cones. It cost around $30 from a local craft store. It's beautiful, just like my mom. I also for the past 2 years have had my daughter make them an ornament (for my mom) and decorations for my dad's shop (he builds violins, and makes knives so he spends lots of time in his shop building, which is set up to look like a cozy log cabin, complete with hardwood floor, rugs, fireplace and woodburning stove).

Last year my parents had me stumped so I took a really cute basket that they could use later and started putting small things that they would like in it - candles, favorite candy, nuts, wine, good CD, good DVD, pretty ornament, holiday napkins and paper plates, calendar for next year etc. They loved it because none of it went to waste. Tailor one to fit your parents and what they like.

A lunch, dinner, or community theater show to which YOU will also accompany them. Otherwise, get their favorite artists' new cds, favorite authors' latest books, or pick out two new dvds (one that each might like) wrapped with two bags/boxes of microwave popcorn.
