I am hoping to get a tortoise soon, probably a young one. I have been reading about tortoise tables and vivariums on the net but am confused over which would be best. Can anyone offer any advice please? Thanks.

Tortoises need large, open spaces- they do not use any of the vertical space, and need lots of horizontal space.

A typical adult tortoise wants about 3m x 1m (8' x 4') of space- difficult to do in a vivarium.

On the other hand, many tortoises want controlled temps and humidity- tough to control in open spaces like a table.

What most keepers do is to use vivaria for smaller torts and young torts, then graduate them to tables when they outgrow the 'tank'.

You can combine the ideas by making a simple 'tent' over the table to help keep humidity and heat in. You can also use a table to great advantage by just keeping it in a room that is always kept warm and humid for them.

Both are equally suitable. The table versions (in the UK) are fairly new and seem to be gaining in popularity - however, I still prefer the vivarium and the reason for that is purely for the health of the Tortoise.

Imagine flies landing on your tortoise's food, laying eggs/maggots...or some harmful bacteria. It would be an extremely rare occurrence in a vivarium where it is enclosed and the environment can be more controlled

It really is your preference - I'm sure some will have negative views on vivariums so........

I've never used one, but just looked to see what they are. I think it would just be personal preference, the table probably being if you're giving it more room. I've always used aquariums/breeder aquariums. You just have to make sure it has all the necessities...right substrate, heat, etc......
