Fear. Who wants to have hurt feelings? A sense of community abides where a person grows up so why not stay there.
But this is not a universal truth. Many African Americans move on to middle and upper class neighborhoods. Many intermarry.

I guess I was very blessed growing up and as an adult. I grew up military and thank-goodness military bases are filled with a good mix of races. Everyone co-existed fairly peacefully. Most of the time you didn't even think about the "color" of the person living next door. We were all human beings and we were all military. I am very thankful I have lived in that type of environment. My children grew up in this type of environment as well and today -- they do not "see color" in people. Now if the rest of America could just do the same.

interior the 60's it replaced into called White Flight - Caucasians moving removed from the Black incursion into their traditionally all-white neighborhoods. there is an equivalent reaction between Blacks, what I call Black Flight. Blacks attempt to flee the subjects their incursion into classic white neighborhoods brought about [crime, drugs, gangs, etc.]. considering they have accomplished extra useful for themselves [extra useful employment, extra useful wages], they are enabled to circulate removed from those neighborhoods and those issues. In our Birmingham, Alabama community, the line replaced into completely populated via Caucasians, with one exception - a Black kin. the two have been experts, took satisfaction of their artwork, raised to blame little ones. sooner or later, in the time of a harm from mowing our lawns, Mr. Lewis and that i had a communication which partly went like this: "a number of my acquaintances do no longer understand why I moved out right here. they choose me to return because of the fact they are afraid i'm elevating my little ones "White." there is not any way in [expletive deleted] that i might ever circulate back there. i choose a extra useful life for my little ones, for my spouse, for me!" to respond to your question, they circulate away because of the fact they do no longer choose to be there any further.

for the same reasons whites stay in their own neighborhoods, its just who u feel comfortable around. For the record here in NYC most historically black neighborhoods such as Harlem and Bed Stuy are seeing more and more white ppl moving in, its called gentrification

for the same reasons that other races stay in their own neighborhoods: it's home. We've got to stick together.
