The Mayans calculated that on Dec 21 2012, the sun will be at the galactic center. The Mayan calendar ends on this day.
There has been much speculation about what this means.
NASA has calculated that this is going to be the day of what is called SOLAR MAX, a time where the suns corona gives of a large amount of solar flares. These flares can cause damage to all the satellites that we have orbiting the earth.
There has also been many apocoliptic speculation on what is going to happen on this day.
I personally belive that on DEC 24 of 2012 we will begin to see the beginning of the earth changing its magenetic field.
This means that the earth will go into convulsions as it tries to flip the direction of the poles. North will become South and South will become North.

Sounds to me like yet another little bit of pseudoscience to target to grants credbility and substance to Mayan predictions of long in the past! (a million) the area from the Orion Arm the position the solar is positioned to the galactic centre is 25 thousand mild years, i'm curious what style of radiation or different disaster risky to existence in the international is going to unexpectedly leap for the length of such an huge distance and with what intensity? (2) gained't this zap result take a at the same time as to get the following (given no longer something travels faster than the speed of light) and assuming that that factor put off is a minimum of 25 thousand years, gained't we've moved on and be out of damage's way by technique of then? (3) Or are you suggesting that the Galactic Centre has by some skill were given homing contraptions equipped into its torpedoes? (4) Why do you assume that merely because there takes position to be an alignment, there'll be a disaster? it is superstititous and paranoid and attracts heavily on astrology myths abour planetary alignment having some particular value for humanity, (5) The solar is orbiting the galaxy at a speed of 217 km/2d so it is going to really straight away bypass out of alignment back the subsequent day, (6) The solar has accomplished some 20 orbits or so around the Galactic Centre to this factor, averaging 225-250 million years for each such journey. i.e. we were the following before. what's so particular about this alignment that it will be uniquely existence-threatening the position the different 19 were no longer? Sorry in spite of the indisputable fact that the total aspect merely no longer get up to smart scrutiny and that i think that the recent Age thinkers who peddle those superatitions do exactly not understand any easy astroomy which may tall them that ... "It takes the picture voltaic equipment about 225-250 million years to finish one orbit (a galactic 365 days), and so is known to have accomplished about 20-25 orbits for the duration of its lifetime or 0.0008 orbit because the starting place of people. The orbital speed of the picture voltaic equipment is 217 km/s, i.e. a million mild-365 days in circa. 1400 years, and a million AU in 8 days." (see link, decrease than) a thanks to arm your self adversarial to such lack of know-how and superstition is to study appreciably.

The universe is about 440 thousand billion times bigger than our galaxy. Nothing that happens in our galaxy is going to affect the rest of universe very much.
If you just mean Earth, it is 24,800 light-years from the galactic center. The sun and the planets orbit the galaxy once every 250 million years. We are not ever going to be at the galactic center.

It is the first day of the Winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, in the Southern Hemisphere, the last day of the spring season.
Some believe that it is the start of the end and the beginning of planetary cycles that are going to culminate, not begin, in 2012 when the world will end.
Me I just think its 2 days before Christmas.

Yes. Our universe will be right at the center of the galaxy. Put another Britney Spears album on and enjoy it.

You know, if you're going to use words, you really ought to know their meanings first. While you're doing that, learn a little about how everything is moving around out there. That way, when you ask a question, it won't be necessary to write an entire treatise on cosmology just to answer it properly.

Nothing in particular, other than the official change of seasons.
The universe encompasses everything that exists. It is much, much, much bigger than our galaxy. Our galaxy resides within the universe, not the other way around.

our universe contains the galaxy we are in so part of it is always at the galactic centre. i dnt think the whole universe would collapse into the galactic centre as this would be rather disastrous and impossible by conventional theories.
