To remember the dead, the sacrifice they made in wars/conflicts. it`s a mark of respect for without the sacrifice you would not have the freedom you have today. Also to remember those in conflicts now....

It depends on when the two minutes silence takes place.
I will, however, assume you mean the upcoming one on 11/11 at 11 oclock, this commemorates the ending of the first world war and you are supposed to use the silence to reflect upon the deaths of all who died in the Great War.
This usually applies to other 2 minute silences for different events, eg 9/11 to commemorate deaths of those in the World trade Centre.

A sign of respect from the nation at large for those that lost their lives serving their country. Originally on what is termed Armistice day, following WW1 at 11am, on the 11th day 0f the 11th month. Then has been extended to all the victims of wars since , especially WW2. Although the actual ceremony takes place at the Cenotaph in Whitehall in London.,,the two minute silence is observed internationally...

2 Min's are used because it takes the first minute for all the noisy buggers to stop talking then you get the 1 minutes silence you were looking for as a mark if respect.

it is out of respect for those that lost their lives for our country. It is so we can stand in silence and thank those men and women that gave their life so that we could have a better life.
