How did the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz affect you? Was it well written? Were the characters believeable?

When I first read the book, I was very startled to find how different it was from the movie. I liked it and after another time or two reading it, I appreciated how much more complex Baum's OZ was then the movie's OZ. I found I cared more about the characters after reading the book.
