I am an atheist because I don't believe in deities and the word atheist describes this state of disbelief. I don't believe in deities because no argument or evidence presented to me in support of their existence has been convincing.
1. Biology adequately describes life and emotions without appealing to mystical invisible dieties
2. Astronomy adequately describes the formation of stars/planets/universe/etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties
3. Geology adequately describes the evolution of the Earth, land formations, etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties
4. Psychology describes the human psyche better than appealing to mystical invisible dieties
5. Appealing to mystical invisible dieties is an appeal to ignorance
6. There's no physical evidence for the existence of mystical invisible dieties
7. A myriad of mystical invisible dieties have been posited by emphatically superstitious societies and have been proven to be products of overly active imaginations (today's religion is tomorrow's myth) and ignorance.
8. Believing in mystical invisible dieties seems to become quite absurd when those who posit the mystical invisible dieties begin explaining why and how they exist in the face of contradictory physical evidence.
9. As scientific knowledge increases, the role of the mystical invisible dieties oddly gets pushed further and further back.
10. Mystical invisible dieties are mystical invisible dieties (ie can never be found by empirical methods)
We atheists are nothing like what the church leaders are fond of charicaturing us as. We are freethinking individuals who are able to see the Big Picture without the blinders of religion.
We do not live in despair, quite the contrary; freethought is incredibly refreshing, liberating, and empowering. We are not nihilists, but lovers of life who see it as all the more precious because there's no eternal afterlife. We do not need the bribe of heaven or the threat of hell to be good people, we believe in being good for its own sake.
Through science and reason, we know more about the true nature of the world we live in than your religion could ever hope to offer.
The fear of death is a natural thing, which is why you need to think hard about living your life for the moment. We are not the enemy of christians and other theists. Our quarrel is with irrationality, wishful thinking, superstitions, intellectual dishonesty, and all other forms of thinking that keep mankind mired in darkness, ignorance and hate.

Most people claiming to be atheists really are not; they are actually agnostics. I am not suggesting that people claiming to be atheists do not believe themselves to be, they do; and many believe it with passion.
An atheist possesses an argument which is both valid and sound (correctly constructed and where all the premises are true) that god (a higher power, creator of the universe, and the like) does not actually exist. It is tempting to say that arguments about something not existing are futile, but that is not the point here (nor is it in fact true).
Most people do not have an argument at all one way or the other. They just "believe" it is true. That is fine, but it does not make one an atheist; it makes one an agnostic.
Most people come to agnosticism through what they perceive as the failures of the theistic enterprise. They do not find any theistic argument as compelling. Others come to the agnostic position because they hold that "belief is a matter of choice." That is to say, they hold that one can choose to believe something, or not to believe something and they choose not to believe that god exists. Others come to agnosticism because of emotional or passional dimensions or experiences. Here you have people who wonder how someone could believe in a god (to use the Jewish writing for a moment) who orders the death of children (say).
None of the positions, save one, should be dismissed lightly. The notion that one can "choose to believe" is incoherent; but the others mentioned here are very powerful, and often for many people, persuasive.
You will on occasion encounter a question or response from someone who is genuinely an atheist, but it is uncommon. What is crucial is that they are able, either to spell out as an argument why god does not exist, or they are prepared to provide defeaters to a wide range of theistic arguments.

Atheist is used in some slightly diverse techniques -no longer incorrect or accurate. All makes use of many times advise that the guy does no longer have self assurance in gods or a particular god. the significant distinction is that some have self assurance this more advantageous strongly than others. i'm ninety 9.9% positive that gods do not exist. some atheists will say they're one hundred% positive, others perhaps ninety%. some atheists would desire that they could have self assurance in god(s), yet many (maximum?) persons do no longer desire for that. maximum atheists have struggled appreciably with their idea platforms, and characteristic arrived at this position: atheism. contained in the approach, maximum persons have grow to be theologists or professionals in non secular idea or maybe epistemology. Our idea platforms are in a lot of cases o.k. concept out, so there is little probability that any persons visit places like Y!A in hopes of turning into theists. We do exactly not imagine that way. Our idea platforms are in accordance to data and sound arguments, so except we adventure some variety of direct revelation or come across a clean effective argument, we are not likely to regulate our beliefs. we are able to benefit information, in spite of the indisputable fact that, and experience ourselves, and likely help others. We belong the following. this isn't your church. it is an open communicate board re spirituality and faith. we've some good critiques on those matters. i pick human beings to study that atheists are all round you popular, we are good moral electorate who look after others. i'd also pick to assist some non secular human beings and doubters to maintain in mind that atheism or a minimum of a-faith, is a achievable selection. I keep in mind that this would seem abhorent to you. i can assure you that it is not evil and that my intentions are to assist human beings. I really have shown effective in this regard on a minimum of a few events, even the following on Y!A. I desire all of us changed into more advantageous civil contained in the discussions as well. you merely might want to dismiss that crap once you're on a loosley-monitored on line communicate board like this. human beings do not behave this kind at the same time as they're in human being. i desire this enables you, my buddy.

An atheist is one who is obstinately obsessed with the negation - 'there is no god'. When an atheist says 'there is no god', he actually means 'I do not believe there is god'.
Assertions or negations can be proved, if they are based on experienced facts and axiomatic premises. Beliefs without these basis can never be verified or proved; they can only be endlessly argued.
Atheists are those stuck with unverifiable beliefs.
Contrast an atheist's negation to that of the sages of the ancient East.
Asked what god is, the sages simply say - 'not this, not this', to all that can be experienced - smelt, tasted, seen, felt, or heard.
The sages propose -
'God is not'
'Any of those that the experiencer experiences'
'God is'
'the experiencer who experiences'
An atheist is one, who refuses to start an experiment to verify this.
A theist on the other hand is one who refuses to experiment and blindly accepts the above-said proposition.
A person who is open-minded and commits oneself in an experiment to seek the TRUTH in this proposition is A SEEKER.

Generally an atheist does not believe in a personal deity or in any supernatural powers or spirits. Wikipedia has a good entry for "atheism" if you need a more in depth answer.

They are those who have adopted the belief that God probably does not exist.
All rational atheists agree that there just might be a Creator/God but have decided that seeking such a God would deprive them of the authority over their own lives. In other words, they would no longer be able to do whatever they feel like doing if God was watching them.

Simple question but the answers are really overkill. I think we should declare this question already been answered very well.
All of the answers above are already fine. No more further addendum.
