Carr and Harrington just never panned out to be NFL starters after numerous opportunities.

Alex Smith has shown he can be effective in the right system with decent talent around him.

It's so many factors that you have to take in to tell if a particular college QB will be able to make it in the NFL such as:

Did the QB played in a Pro-system in college and if so how successful his college team offense was.
When on the field, those that QB make good decisions with the football.
Can he move in the pocket to buy time for his receivers to get open.
Those he have the mental makeup to breakdown a defense and know what to do with the football in different defensive coverages.
Does he have the physical ability to a make all of the throws
Those he have leadership skills
Will the NFL team that the QB goes to will let me develop behind a veteran or will they just throw him to the wolves in his first year.
Those the NFL team that this QB goes to have a good Offensive Line

These are just a few factors that a college QB need to have to make it in the Pros. David Carr has the physical ability, but he doesn't have the mental part down and was thrown to the wolves his first year and got beat up behind a horrible Offensive line. Joey Harrington really doesn't have the physical ability to make all of the throws and he make bad decisions with the football. The jury is still out for Alex Smith. He doesn't have a big time arm, but he can make all of the throws, smart, he is mobile and he has a decent head coach. I think most of his struggles are due to him being hurt and having no offensive weapons to throw the ball to and a young defense.

How many of them played in a Pro-Style system in college? THe transistion from a spread, or a run and gun offense to a Pro can be very difficult.....and some players just are not well suited to the play calling neccasary and the ability to read the field that playing a Pro Offense, against other Pro caliber players requires. Also, some of the guys with great stats incollege, never actually played a decent team. Look at Colt Brennnan...he has played against nobody......passes 50 times a game.....and some schmuck will waste a high draft pick on him. At the end of the day, that is what made me a little confused with picking Russel over Brady in the DraFT ( although i am glad where he landed)...Jamarcus MIGHT have a better arm....but can he run a pro-offense, and a no huddle? We will have to wait and see....at ND and in the Preseason, Quinn showed what he can do in a pro offense...even without much supporting talent.

These other guys? Just never had to process the game as fast, make as many decisions, never really had to adjust their protection schemes, etc.......now they do, and they got information overload......which makes you Sack-Bait.

WEll harringtons coach was tedford at the time and he gets the most out of his Qbs which is also why i think aaron rodgers wont b very good and carr and smith played against limited competition at there colleges (fresno state and utah)
