The vehicle is a 99 4 wheel drive ford explorer sport. I noticed a clear oily droppings under the front end of my suv. i took it in to the shop and they did a coolant pressure test and found no leaks. not being satisfied i made them put it on the hoist and showed them myself where the leak was, and the mechanic said "oh, looks like your front diff is leaking". Should i be skeptical of this assessment? im not sure if they are just looking for something to replace to make me happy or if it is legit.

Take your Ford to a car wash and spray the hot soap nozzle directly on the front cover and bottom of the differential get as much grease of as you can. Drive it home and clean off the bottom of the differential housing with CRC Brake Clean.

** Before doing any of the following, locate a pipe plug or recessed 3/8 or 1/2 drive that removes the oil fill plug on the side if the differential housing.

Everything will be dead clean and dry. Place a clean sheet of white wrapping or the tissue fill paper used to wrap presents with directly under the front differential. Let the vehicle sit for a couple of hrs. and inspect the paper and the very bottom of the differential. If you see any leaks you'll know once and for all exactly where the leak is. Buy a new gasket for the front center section plate. Simply put a pan underneath the differential housing remove the bolts, pry off the cover, Scrape off all gasket material, spray clean surfaces with CRC Brake Clean and do the following: Run a bead of Permatex Blue Silicone sealant around the rear end cover and encircle the bolt holes with silicone. Place the gasket on top. Run a fine bead completely around the differential housing. Be sure to run the silicone on both sides of the bolt holes. Put two cap screws opposite each other towards the top of the cover and screw it back on the differential. Screw the remaining cap screws in and cross tighten the cap screws with a 3/8 ratchet and short extension.

You can use a trans. funnel or a flex extension fill gun (looks like a grease gun) to easily fill the housing with fluid.

If you find that the leak is coming from the pinion shaft that hooks to the transmission drive shaft. Think hard and long about this leak as it'd will be hundreds of dollars to be repaired in the Ford garage
