How come people type "lol" when the stuff they say isn't even funny?

I just woke up, lol, and I can't believe what happened. My sock came off my right foot, lol, while I was sleeping! OMG!
This happens all the TIME! Why even bother using it...you're not funny or cute if you do.

I understand if a person says "um" in a conversation, but you're typing! There is a big difference...you can think faster before you type something out, than you can while speaking.

The "OMG!" is included in the whole "lol" schpeel.

Secondly, it's the dumbing down of America that bothers me. People use computers to write all day long, but somehow, not many know how to write a complete sentence. It's very sad. Abbreviations like "lol," "omg," "idk," and so on, don't really help anyone communicate, especially if you use it as filler!

After being overused, it's now just another way of saying:

1. You're boring, now STFU

2. I have nothing worthwhile to contribute to this conversation

3. I'm too lazy to read what you just wrote so I'm typing something useless in hopes that you'll think I'm still paying attention.

4. Your statement lacks even the vaguest trace of humor but I'll pretend I'm amused

5. This is a pointless acronym I'm sticking in my sentence just because it's become so engraved into my mind that when chatting, I MUST use the meaningless sentence-filler 'lol.'"

It should be re-defined as "Lack of laughter".

I agree with you that it gets overused at times, but why let it bother you so much? It means Laugh Out Loud ... so if the user finds something really amusing they have a right to comment how they wish. Who are you or I to judge? I personally use it when I am being a smart a** so the reader will know I am kidding.

Some people have a larger than life sense of humor and find many things funny (which I personally think is a great way to live life) and others have very little sense of humor so they may not agree on what is funny. Either way ... it's their own opinion. You may not think something is funny when someone else thinks it is ... so let them express themselves the way they feel they need to.

In the end - why does it really matter and why do you let something this silly bother you THAT much. You are entitled to your opinion - but so is everyone else. Live and let live. If the worst thing someone has to type is "LOL" than have at it. I can think of things that are just as - if not more annoying - like "OMG!!!!!"

Because it's a space filler when they have nothing else good to say. And then the person that their talking to has an easy response, just another, "lol."

I use lol all the time because some of the stuff I read does make me laugh.It's no big deal just take what you need and leave the rest alone.

LOL can mean a lot of things to older folks.
I thought it meant Lots of Love until I ask my closest contact
& he thought that was funny.
I like plain English myself, not to be misunderstood.

I think its to prove they are joking so the answer won't be taken seriously, like say if you were to make fun of something or someone.
