Most upper class egyptians had servants and slave labor. Some offered their services or family members in exchange for land and goods. Others were indentured servants to households for generations. Those who were imprisoned for various crimes were often used as slave labor until they were no longer able to work.

The "excuse" if you will, is that slavery ended a mere 150 years ago and was followed by 100 years of black people being unable to attend the same schools, go to college, or make money. Often racist whites would burn down sucessful black shops. Slavery was not that long ago, while the Jews were enslaved over 3000 years ago. Man you're simple. How are you going to ignore the fact that blacks have been held at unequal status for all these years and ask "what is their excuse" is beyond me. Black people have had a mere 50 years of "equality" and there are still things that have to be corrected. But whatever fulfills your racist agenda I guess.

Because they could. Why isn't slavery common in the western world? Because it can't be. It isn't out of kindness and loving care that keeps slavery from lifting it's ugly head even worse than it is. It takes guns and peoples lives and lots of overpowing violence or the prospect of it if it should it rear its ugly head. The Egyptians probably got it from the earlier Mesopotamian culture that at one point even included human sacrifice as part of its industry. So if your looking for the roots of slavery and yet blaming some point in time where some poor culture recieves the blunt of your blame for some behavior or conduct commonly active amongst some civilization.

As people generally think that they are better than those who are different. However there were many Black Egyptians and Pharoahs, so the prime reason was that people were used just for labour.
