Literally it means 'love of wisdom' ('philos' means love and 'sophie' means wisdom), and originally it included all of formal learning before all of the different 'subjects' branched off and went their separate ways. Really all it means is just thinking about stuff.

When you ask a question such as what is history, economics, etc., you will get an answer interms of the subject matter of the discipline. For philosophy, such an answer is not possible, since philosophy has everything as its subject matter.
Now one can look for the methids of philosophy to understand what is philosophy, but then that shall be too technical for a novice.
And so we shall fall back on Pythegorus, to say that Philsoophy is love of wisdom.
Philosophy shall be undestood as iindependent search for knowledge, and attempt to understand the unknown, and hence all researches becomes doctor of Philosophy.
In India, it is Darsana, thought process, thiking to know the unknown.
