Doesn't the social contract run both ways? Isn't a group that ignores self interest as bad as a self that ignores group interest?

Why is there no negative word like 'groupish' or 'groupishness' to describe a society overly fixated on pure socialism?

President Kennedy was a great public speaker, but isn't asking what our country can do for us INCLUDED in asking what we can do for our country?

I think you "Hit the nail on the head" here.

In America, I think the words "socialism" or "communism" itself, serves to accomplish what you are getting at with "groupishness"

If the Group protects individual interests, -and- individuals lay aside their selfishness and serve their neighbors, I think that's as close to utopia as your going to get.

I definitely agree with you. Selfishness is greediness. It is thinking of one'self at their advnace interest at the expense of others. What more in a soceity composed of groups that collectively gain advantage among other groups. However, I believe there is no groupish thing because the individuality of a person is very much different from a group. You cannot carry the sin of one as the sin of the group. The all for one and one for all notion will definitely not apply in the instance case. Selfishness is drawn towards one's self preservation and egoism which is not present in a group. To each his own as they say.

Thanks for asking. Have a great day!

I think the groupishness you speak of is simply nationalism. That's what groups do. They define themselves by deciding they are one united thing, then they go about getting and doing everything they can for themselves to feel validated and unique. People live and die for this.

theres no sin in a group being selfish in as much as one can be selfish. its all about politics, and we political animals we have no choice than be groupish or selfish, since politics is all about interests.
